DEATH, USS SEMINOLE, MOBILE BAY. Large 8" x 7" bound diary has over 80 pages filled out in pencil or ink, day by day along with a few transcribed poems. CHARLES EDWIN MILLIKEN (1848-1864) had just turned 16 when diary begins Feb. 12, 1864 on blockade of Sabine Pass, Texas , April 7, 1864 the USS Seminole was off the coast of Mobile, young Milliken was good writer & detailed accounts. He was only 14 years old when he enlisted. His last entries August 23-"..our boat left the ship for the fort & I went in…. 2 o'clock Fort Morgan is ours and our flag waves over her in triumph. I went down to the fort with the officers for trophies. I got a musket… Aug 24 the day is pleasant..the army can be seen marching into Ft Morgan ..waving the STAR SPANGLED BANNER. The Selma came along..the Monitor Manhattan got up to the house, the ship's company was to sleep in…..The USS Queen came inside to say the oyster man was alongside again today…This was last entry, Aug 25 as he was on duty that day removing "torpedoes" in Mobile Bay, when one exploded killing Milliken and 4 other seamen, 6 seriously wounded, 3 slightly wounded. He would be buried the next day at Fort Morgan. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder of research and transcription of diary. CONDITION: diary is very good, complete and easily read. (02-26293/JS).
