Winchester-Hotchkiss First Model 1879 Bolt Action Saddle Ring Carbine, #49, .45-70 cal., 24" round barrel, blue finish, straight grip walnut 3/4 length stock, pinned blade front sight, with flip-up adjustable rear sight. This carbine also features a 5-round tubular magazine located inside the stock, saddle ring, and magazine cut-off switch (missing) on the right side of the stock so the carbine could be used as a single shot or a repeater. Left side of the receiver with serial number and Winchester/Hotchkiss maker and patent information, marked in three-lines. Mfgd circa 1879. This carbine is in overall fair condition, displaying approx. 15%-20% thinning and toning blue finish, primarily to the buttplate, with the balance of the guns parts gone to a gray/brown patina. As noted previously, the magazine cut-off switch is missing. Factory lettering is legible. The hardwood stock is fair, with a 1.5" break at the top right side of the wrist, which has been repaired with a small pin. There is another 2" crack at the bottom of the wrist, behind the rear trigger guard tang. Otherwise, wood displays numerous old dents and scratches throughout. Action is crisp. Bore is mostly bright with very good, clearly defined rifling, surface with some scattered light erosion, primarily near the muzzle. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
