Cal. 30-06. S# A9183. Bbl 22" marked over chamber "JA / 30-06" and encircled "dagger" acceptance mark. Assembly number matches on barrel and barrel shank. The Johnson semi-auto rifle was developed just prior to WWII by Melvin Johnson and was submitted to be adopted in place of the M1 Garand. This did not happen, but Johnson secured a large contract with the Dutch government, who wanted the rifles for service in the East Indies. Some were delivered there, but the majority were taken-up by the U.S. government. It should be noted that the serial numbers on Johnson rifles rarely if ever were matched at the factory. Barrel carries its blade front sight with protective ears and bayonet lug. Sight and lug retaining pins appear to be replacements and are finished bright. Adjustable aperture rear sight graduated to 1,000 meters. Barrel markings include "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS / MODEL OF 1941 / MADE IN PROVIDENCE RI. U.S.A. / CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO". Right rear of the receiver has the Cranston Arms co inverted triangle and five-pointed Dutch acceptance star. Checkered steel buttplate. Walnut stock set. Buttstock has the later added cheeks behind magazine. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original Johnson spike bayonet. 7 7/8" blade. Bayonet is marked with "2957" on the barrel ring and stamped on the flat area "B6646". Original unmarked brown leather scabbard. Scabbard has notable scuffing and flexing. Stitching is loose at tip. Bayonet has moderate wear throughout. CONDITION: stock set has moderate wear and handling marks in its arsenal rework type finish. Large repaired crack extends around buttstock behind grip and on left side below rear sight. Notable gouge in left side of grip area. Metal retains 75% of its original parkerized finish with light wear. Rear sight appears to have been reblued and numbers are enhanced in yellow. Bright shiny bore with sharp lands. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. (26-24/RW). CURIO. $6,000-10,000.
