Cal. 30-06. S# 3058. Bbl. 22". The Johnson semi-auto rifle was developed just prior to WWII by Melvin Johnson and was submitted to be adopted in place of the M1 Garand. This did not happen, but Johnson secured a large contract with the Dutch government, who wanted the rifles for service in the East Indies. Some were delivered there, but the majority were taken-up by the U.S. government. It should be noted that the serial numbers on Johnson rifles rarely if ever were matched at the factory. Barrel marked over the chamber area "J.A. / .30-06", encircled "dagger" acceptance mark and "9060E" which matches on barrel and barrel extension. Barrel has blade front sight with protective ears and barrel band. Adjustable aperture rear sight graduated to 1,000 meters. Receiver markings include "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS / MODEL OF 1941 / MADE IN PROVIDENCE RI. U.S.A.". Right rear of receiver carries the Cranston Arms co. inverted triangle and five-pointed Dutch acceptance star. Two-piece walnut stock set. Buttstock has the added cheeks behind the magazine. Checkered steel buttplate. WWI era Model 1907 leather sling marked "M.W.H. CO.". Sling fitted with brass hooks. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 7 7/8" Johnson original spike bayonet. Bayonet is marked only with "205" on the muzzle ring. Correct original brown leather scabbard with retaining strap. Bayonet and scabbard are in worn, but serviceable condition. Scabbard stitching remains tight. CONDITION: rifle has been professionally restored with a dark parkerized finish. Stock set has light wear and tiny scattered handling marks. There is a faintly visible "4" in the cheek area of the buttstock. There is a neatly executed inletted repair on top of the buttstock around the buttplate tang. Metal retains a large percentage of its restored finish with light high-point wear. Front sight blade has been reduced in height. Barrel has lightly worn lands and a frosted appearance in the grooves. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. (26-23/RW). CURIO. $6,000-10,000.
