LUGER WITH RARE 200MM BERN FACTORY TARGET BARREL. Cal. 30 Luger. S# P26485. In the early 1940s, Waffenfabrik Bern prepared a small number of pistols with special extra-long barrels for national shooters. These barrels came in two lengths, 170 and 200 millimeters, and were fitted to both commercial and military pistols. Unlike most pistols, these barrels were not serial numbered to the guns, but were numbered in their own separate range, each barrel length independently and sequentially numbered from 1-20. This particular Bern 1929 Luger is in the Commercial series and has been fitted with a 200 millimeter barrel (7 7/8 inches), BP proofed, the SN: "4" marked on bottom, with an adjacent Swiss acceptance. The balance of the pistol is made and marked as per the Commercial series with a Swiss Cross-in-Shield on the forward toggle link, standard U-notch rear sight, and the "P" prefix serial number on the left rail and rear toggle link, the last three digits under the sideplate and on the barrel extension lug. The year "44" is in the forward frame recess, month not clearly discernible, though it may be a "4". Simpson LTD import mark discreetly applied in the magazine plug cutout. Fitted with dark chocolate brown checkered plastic grips. MAGS: x1 correct 8-rd. mag. with a matching colored chocolate brown base. CONDITION: bright 98+% Bern arsenal blue with faint sharp edge wear, slight fading of the sideplate hump, and a few miniscule marks as one might expect from a carefully handled target pistol. Comparable condition grips, the mold markings and checkering sharp, no discernible losses or splits. Grip screws with straight slots. Excellent magazine. Near mirror bore. Correct manual mechanics. An absolutely wonderful Waffenfabrik Bern 1929 Commercial Luger with special order 200mm target barrel, made in 1944, seldom offered for sale. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. (26-2219/LMA). CURIO. $8,500-12,500.
