Cal. 30 US (.30-40 Krag). S# 23414. Bbl. 27 7/8". Model 1895 lever action rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1899. Left side of the bbl. is marked "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER", with ".30 U.S." marked on the top towards the breech. Left side of the receiver is marked with Winchester's 2-line mfg. and patent information "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./ NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT.NOV.5.95.NOV.12.95.AUG.17.97.JAN.25.98." above a factory added "AUG.23.98", indicating that this receiver was created prior to the updated patent markings. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the hammer and trigger, which exhibit a case colored finish. Ebony inlaid schnabel tip forend and plain wood straight grip buttstock with crescent steel buttplate. Buttstock has possibly been lightly sanded and refinished at one time. Apparent period aftermarket high profile brass blade front sight with dovetailed V-notch rear sight. Left side of the receiver has been drilled and tapped with 2 plug screws, likely for a "Climbin' Lyman" receiver sight. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning fading to gray and brown patinas, scattered superficial handling marks, as well as scattered spots / patches of light to mild surface oxidation. Right side of receiver and bbl. exhibit scattered patches of mild pitting and discoloration. Trigger and hammer retain fair amounts of case coloring in protected areas. Relatively bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sound. Buttstock exhibits a chip on the left side along the upper receiver tang, with an additional chip present at the toe. (25-5460/MLW). CURIO. $700-1,000.
