Cal. 32-40. S# 673348. Mfg. 1914. After SN 300,000 carbines that were shipped to areas outside of cattle country were shipped without saddle rings, unless specially requested. It is fitted with a 20" bbl that has a riser pinned bead front sight and adjustable leaf sporting rear sight that is missing the leaf. The bbl is marked with a side canted address "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21. 1894" & "32-40" caliber marking. It has a 2/3 mag which is a rarity not typically found on a carbine. The forearm is of rifle length held with a single bbl band. The straight grip frame has the "MODEL 1894 / -WINCHESTER- / TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF." tang marking. The butt is of rifle type with shotgun shaped butt. No buttplate present. CONDITION: overall fair. The bbl & mag have 20% original bluing remaining in the protected areas with the balance having a mottled grey patina with spotty old oxidation and cleaned areas. The frame is void of finish with a balanced silvery grey patina and small spotty oxidation and a few handling marks. The stock set has been sanded and refinished with added varnish. The forearm is hand worn with some dings and dents, as well as, a crack forward of the bbl band. The buttstock is hand worn with some dents and handling marks. Dark bore with pitting and some wear to the rifling. (26-171/ZAL). CURIO. $700-1,000.
