RIFLE FROM THE HARROW SCHOOL. Cal. 303 British. S# 3636. Bbl. 24 5/8". This rifle, likely produced by BSA, was acquired by the Wilkinson Sword Company and is so marked on the left side of the receiver. The rifle was then purchased by Lady Northwick to be given as a prize to the winner of the Northwick Rifle Competition from Harrow School. This rifle was won in 1903 by John Daniel Schweder Tremlett. Mr. Tremlett served his country in both World Wars and was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. John Tremlett and his wife resided in Africa where he worked as a veterinarian. John Tremlett died at Naivasha, Kenya on August 10th, 1969. This fine rifle has three inletted plates, the first of which is on the left side of the buttstock. The oval plate is engraved with the Coat of Arms of the Harrow School. The right side of the buttstock has an oval plate engraved "PRESENTED BY / LADY NORTHWICK / TO JDS TREMLETT". The belly of the stock carries the Tremlett family motto on a smaller oval plate reading "TREMERE NESCIT VIRTUS / VIRTUE KNOWS NOT HOW TO FEAR". The barrel has a raised solid rib matted on top. Rear sight has two folding leaves for 200 and 300 yards and the folding ladder is graduated to 1,000 yards. Sporting bead type front sight with shallow protective ears. Barrel is marked on right side "NITRO PROVED". The receiver has a tear-drop matting on both sides with engraved borders. Receiver is equipped with cocking indicator and thumb safety on the left side. The opening lever gracefully follows the curve of the pistol grip and ends in a hollow cylinder. Very nicely figured walnut stock set. Buttstock and forend are nicely checkered and equipped with horn forend tip and grip cap. Engraved trap buttplate. Sling eyes are fitted underneath buttstock and at mid-point between forend and muzzle under barrel. The buttstock is additionally marked with what appears to be "W868" located directly behind grip cap. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: vintage pull through cleaner in butt. CONDITION: the stock set has the moderate wear and handling marks of a rifle which has seen a great deal of careful use. Light coating of additional finish has filled the buttstock checkering. The checkering in the forend has the appearance of being refreshed. Metal has turned a worn gray with traces of blue in protected areas and has the beginnings of patina. Bore has a darkened appearance with worn rifling and shallow pitting. PROVENANCE: very large file of research relating to Mr. Tremlett, his family, his WWI service and the Harrow School. Includes photos of then Lieutenant Tremlett and a CD disc of his service papers. (26-2137/RW). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
