A.C. VICARY RECIPENET OF ONE MC & TWO DSOS.Cal. 455. S# 1634. Bbl. 6". Blade front sight. V-notch rear sight. Latch appears to be numbered "90" but other visible numbered parts are matching. Back strap marked "A.C. Vicary". This revolver was purchased by Lt. Col. Alexander Craven Vicary in February 1908. Vicary won the DSO twice & Military Cross the latter at the Second Battle of Ypres. His service during the Salonika front was notable. His citation for the 2nd DSO reads: ‘Capt. and Bt. Maj. (A./Lt.-Col.) Alexander Craven Vicary, D.S.O., M.C., 2nd Bn., Glouc. R. (SALONIKA). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion, to duty during an attack. He set a fine example to all ranks of coolness and courage under heavy shell fire. The manner in which his battalion carried through the operation and consolidated and retained the position under subsequent intense bombardment was undoubtedly due to his personal gallantry and marked ability to command'. Vicary & his horse would see service all across Europe including Flanders, Serbia & Russia. Vicary's famous horse Sikh was from bred in Australia, spent time in India & China before the war & then traveled a perilous sea journey to Europe avoiding German warships. Sikh served with him throughout the war. Arsenal rework blued finish. Vulcanite grips. Lanyard ring present on bottom of grip frame. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: several documents with information on Vicary, his horse & a Webley factory letter from Richard Milner. CONDITION: grips show some notable checkering wear, some large dings at rear of left panel, scattered handling marks & smaller dings. Metal retains 92-93% arsenal rework blue with some finished over pitting, edge wear, handling marks & light oxidation. Firing pin protrudes outward but action functions properly when hand cycled.
