RIFLE. Cal. 30 US (30-40 Krag). S# 5-61. Barrel 30" tapered with combination globe front sight, dovetail blank in rear seat and tang sight on upper tang. Top of barrel stamped "30 U.S.A.". Introduced in 1898, the No. 5 sporting & target rifles were designed for the new smokeless ammunition. As advertised this new line of rifles was capable of handling high pressure loads utilizing smaller cartridges that would produce equal or better stopping power than their black powder counterparts. Chamberings included 30-30 smokeless, 7mm, 30 U.S. Army, 32-40 High Pressure Marlin & 32 Win Spcl. While these No. 5's bear striking similarities to many of their military counterparts of the time, as noted on page 297 of "Remington Rolling Block Rifles, Carbines and Shotguns SPORTING AND TARGET RIFLES" by Roy Marcot "It is incorrect to refer to Remington Model 1897, Model 1901 or Model 1914 Military Rifles and Carbines as No. 5's. This designation was reserved solely for Remington No. 5 Sporting & Target rifles.". Production of this model was extremely limited with public preference leaning toward repeating firearms. Manufacturing of the No. 5 ceased in 1904 with only 198 rifles produced making these exceptionally scarce today. Case hardened rolling block action. Smooth walnut schnable tipped forend with ebony insert & straight grip stock having steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Aforementioned reference book is included with this rifle. Consignor note regarding appraisal from Griffin & Howe appraiser Paul Chapman in which he valued this rifle between $9,000-9,500. CONDITION: Blued parts retain 85% original thinning finish with even mild freckling and scattered spots of cleaned oxidation. Receiver retains 75% bright original case colors with scattered spots of cleaned oxidation. Stock & forend in very good original condition with numerous scattered light dings, scratches & impressions. Oil staining at metal parts. Very good bore with strong rifling shows lightly frosted appearance in grooves. This rare Rolling Block variation is sure to fill a hole in an advanced Remington Rolling Block collection. (26-1466/BH). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.
