Cal. 9mm (9mm Luger). S# U4655. Bbl. 8". Originally developed and mfg. by Smith & Wesson during the Vietnam War to compensate for the lack of imported (and desired) Swedish M/45B submachine guns. This example, has a "U" S# suffix, indicating production for the civilian / law enforcement market, as compared to the military. The left side of the receiver tube is marked "SMITH & WESSON", with "MOD. 76" and the S# marked on the right. Left side of mag. well assembly is marked with S&W's mfg. information, with S&W's trademark logo marked on the right. Metal components exhibit a matte gray finish overall. 2-piece checkered black synthetic grips, with side-folding steel buttstock, featuring a black rubber coating. Perforated bbl. shroud with fixed post front sight and peep rear sight. MAGS: x1 proper S&W 36-rd. CONDITION: excellent, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their original factory finish, exhibiting some light thinning on edges and a few superficial handling marks overall. Bolt shows patches of silvering from cycling of the action. Bright bore, exhibiting streak of what appears to be hardened carbon and/or grease along the edges of the lands, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sound. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-2400/MLW). CURIO. CLASS III. $14,000-18,000.
