MILITARY STYLE BREECH LOADING CARBINE. Cal. 32 Bore (.526 Cal.) S# 6746. A total of 4,997 model 1852 carbines were mfg within the SN range 2,041-7,500 from June 1853-July 1855. Of these the vast majority are found in this caliber. Production of the 1852 began at Robbins & Lawrence's factory in Windsor, VT and eventually the production was moved to Hartford, CT. This example was finished in Hartford with the 3-line "SHARP'S RIFLE/MANUFG CO./HARTFORD.CONN." address found on the 21" bbl behind the later variation Squirrel ear rear sight. This was a commercially made carbine lacking the contract inspections that were found on the barrels of those examples. The barrel is matching with the full SN "6746" found under the forearm. A single brass bbl band and screw fasten the forearm to the bbl. The forearm has the lever key retention spring that is unique to the 1852 model. The original long sling ring bar attaches to the brass forearm band at one end with the opposite fastening to the action. The lock is marked with the standard "SHARPS/PATENT/1852" roll stamping. The top tang is has the "C.SHARPS/PATENT/1848" patent marking and SN. It is fitted with the original military style 2-piece carbine stock set with brass patchbox & buttplate. CONDTION: overall very good. Metal surface finish has faded to a smooth mottled grey/brown patina. The stock set is a very good set that was lightly sanded with some added varnish and some scattered dents and dings. There are two short cracks on the forearm just forward of the lever and a chip on the butt at the lock edge. Brass furniture has been lightly cleaned with a nice mellow patina remaining. Markings are nice and legible. Good bore with nice sharp rifling and some pits. (01-29046/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
