REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 1434. This revolver was made in Hartford in 1848; the 1st Hartford civilian dragoon was S# 1341, the earliest revolvers are very rare and this is among the finest survivors known. Most of this production was sold rapidly and went west, finding a fine 1st model with finish is a rarity. CONDITION: fine overall. All matching serial numbers observed on barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, & backstrap. Wedge has bright blue internally and stamped "972". Small "51" stamped on barrel in well, lever is unmarked and originally would have matching batch number. Lever likely is original factory replacement with muted case colors matching case color of frame. Complete and original, sharp edges, crisp markings. About 30% original blue finish on barrel. Frame, lever, & hammer have traces of muted case color, matching silver/gray overall. 95% crisp rolled Dragoon Indian fight scene on cylinder, good single safety pin as manufactured. Grip frame retains about 40% silver plate. Grips retain 80-90% original factory varnish. Mechanically fine with crisp bright rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Martin Lane lifetime collection. (01-28160/JS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-40,000.
