GRADE 2 SHOTGUN. Cal. 12ga. S# 133. Mfg 1882-89. These early American shotguns were the first truly successful slide action that was produced in the US. They were invented by Christopher Spencer, who is best known for his military carbines that were used throughout the US Civil & Indian wars. Eventually, Spencer sold the patents to Bannerman's which continued production until approx 1907. The shotgun was produced prior to the sale and is fitted with a 30" damascus bbl with steel bead front sight & "SPENCER ARMS CO. WINDSOR. CT. U.S.A. PAT. APR. 1882" bbl address. It has a checkered trombone slide that is found on the 1882 models. It has a case colored solid frame with single trigger. It has a round knob pistol grip butt that is terminated with a checkered hard rubber butt plate. CONDITION: overall very fine. The bbl has very nice browned finish with a few small patches of old oxidation and light handling marks. The frame retains 80% of its attractive lightly faded original case colors with some mild scratches, fine pinprick old oxidation and handling marks. The stock set is sound with light hand wear to the checkering. Forearm is nice with a couple of minor handling marks. The butt is also very good with some dents and light scratches. The butt plate has a small chip at the toe. Bore has scattered patches of shallow pitting. A great opportunity on a high condition iconic early American shotgun. (01-29119/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
