2 REVOLVER WITH INCISED FACTORY MOTHER OF PEARL GRIPS. Cal. 30 RF. S# K7 96. Mfg. 1870-98. The Hopkins & Allen XL series began production in the late 1870's while the company was referred to as the Hopkins & Allen Mfg. Co. The company had begun a partnership with Merwin & Hulbert earlier in the decade. The success from the relationship allowed for the expansion to a larger plant and introduction of the new line of XL series revolvers. When Merwin & Hulbert went bankrupt in 1896 it severely affected H&A until the firm eventually reorganized as the Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. This rare factory engraved example is fitted with a 2 3/8" bbl that carries the earlier 2-line "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG. CO. / PAT. MAR. 28. 1871 APR. 27. 1875" bbl address. It has nearly full coverage exhibition quality foliate scroll engraving with punch-dot background & geometric borders. The top of the frame is marked with the "XL. No 2." model designation. The bbl, frame, cylinder and grips all have matching SN. The birds head mother-of-pearl grips are incised with a foliate vine motif with dark filler giving an attractive contrast to the grips. CONDITION: overall very fine example with unique factory embellishments. It retains 99% of it's original nickel finish. Grips are very fine. The bore has worn rifling with frosting and some pits. (01-28884/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
