SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. Cal. 58. There just over 4,000 of these pistol carbines produced at Springfield from 1855-57. It is fitted with a 12" round rifled barrel with raised base iron blade front sight and 2-leaf rear sight. The bbl is proofed with "V/P/Eagle" markings and "1856" dated tang. The 1856 dated lock with Maynard tape primer system is marked with "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" forward the primer system and an eagle on the primer cover plate. Swivel type steel ramrod. Brass mounts. Iron backstrap. The brass butt is marked with the assembly number "13". The stock has assembly number "10" on the brass yoke. It has a brass "US" marked buttplate. CONDITION: overall fair. Cleaned iron surfaces have some pitting with soft markings. The stock has been sanded and refinished with 2 through cracks at the wrist and another extending backwards from the lock. Stock has scattered handling marks and a lightly refinished stock. Good bore with a little frosting and some pitting. (01-29135/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
