P. & E.W. BLAKE. Cal. 69. Bbl. 42". The P. & E.W. Blake marked 1816 contract muskets were actually muskets from the first contract of 15,000 muskets with Eli Whitney. Whitney passed due to an illness prior to the fulfillment of the contract. His nephews, Philos & Eli Whitney Blake, assumed responsibilities of operating the factory prior to his death and continued running the factory after his passing until 1834. The muskets they produced were 1816 pattern with 1822 updates. It is fitted with a 1828 dated 42" bbl held with 3 bbl bands retained by band springs. The lock is marked with the nephews markings "P&EW BLAKE" under "U.S." & "NEW HAVEN / 1827" at the rear. The standard pattern walnut stock has the rings remaining of the 2 illegible inspector cartouches near the side plate. Iron trigger guard and buttplate with US stamped tang. Modern replacement ramrod. CONDITION: Overall good. The metal has turned to a nice even aged brown patina with some scattered dents. The markings are crisp. The sound stock has been lightly sanded with numerous dents, some edge chipping and handling marks. Bore is not bad with some pitting. (01-29180/ZAL) ANTIQUE $1200-1800
