ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 43307. Mfg. 1862. This revolver began its life at amidst the US Civil War and was later arsenal reworked during the Indian Wars at the arsenal in St. Louis. This example was one of the approx 1500 units that was reworked sometime between 1867-69. During the process a U.S. was stamped just forward of the trigger guard. Typically there was no regard for matching SN's, however this example retains a fair amount of its original Civil War era components. The process including cleaning and repairing revolvers to equip units heading to the frontier. The frame, brass front strap, iron back strap, & arbor are matching SN "43307". The bbl is "121539". Wedge is "9166". Cylinder is "1539". The grips are original Colt 1-piece with no legible number in the channel. The bbl on this example is 8" with 1-line New York address and double "H H" & "W" inspector proofs. The 3 screw frame has the standard "COLTS/PATENT" marking with the recoil shield notched for a stock and capping channel present. The brass trigger guard strap was "U.S." marked by the St. Louis Arsenal just forward of the trigger guard. The iron backstrap is notched for a stock and has a "S" inspector proof. The 6-shot rebated cylinder is roll stamped with the naval engagement scene and "H" & "W" inspector proofed. CONDITION: Overall good. Barrel has been cleaned with a nice mellow greyish/brown patina, some old pitting and very crisp bbl markings. The cylinder scene is very good, engagement date is not legible, and cylinder pins are mostly intact with moderate to heavy wear. Frame and backstrap are smooth with an even patina. Grips are hand worn with some chipping on the high edge and a very faint inspector cartouche ring on the left side. Bore has decent gain twist rifling and some pitting.
