SHOT TRAPDOOR MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 263826. 32 1/2" bbl is marked on top left rear with "V P" with eagle head acceptance mark, followed by "P" and marked on top with "R". Model 1879 rear sight graduated to 1200 yards marked "R". Sight screws are non-slotted. Blade front sight. "1873" dated low arch breech block with aluminum bronze firing pin. 3-click tumbler. Lockplate marked "US / SPRINGFIELD / spread wing eagle". Forend with 2 bands retained by springs. Late type ramrod. Long comb walnut stock has faint boxed "SWP / 1884", encircled script "P" proof under grip. Solid "US" marked buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Model 1873 socket bayonet. Triangular blade is 18" long, marked "US" on top. Black finished metal scabbard. Leather frog with brass belt hook. Belt hook is marked "WATERVLIET / ARSENAL". Scabbard has flaking finish and is slightly bent, but is serviceable. Bayonet retains 40% of its original blue with oxidation turning to patina. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear and handling marks throughout. Rack number in white partly removed from right side of butt. Metal retains traces of blue in protected areas, turning overall gray and patina with moderate wear. Bore has lightly frosted oxidized appearance with strong lands.
