BREECHLOADING PARLOR RIFLE. Cal. 9mm. S# 120. Bbl. 23". Sliding bbl. breechloading parlor rifle produced by an unknown mfg. in Belgium. Left flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with a triad of Belgian proofs. Left side of the receiver is marked with a Star/S proof towards the breech, with an encircled "S" proof and the S# "120" (S# repeated on underside of bbl.) marked on the right side below the wood line. Receiver, trigger guard, and buttplate exhibit a case colored finish, with the bbl. exhibiting a blue finish. 1-piece straight hand stock featuring wrap around checkering at the forearm and wrist. Dovetailed blade front sight with integral rear sight consisting of a raised block with a grooved and a peep rear sight. The unusual action is unique, with the operator having to push the lever on the right side of the receiver downward and pull the bbl. forward for loading / unloading. Upon closing, the lever is then pulled rear and downward, releasing the firing pin. Unusually, the trigger does not appear to catch the firing pin besides at the rear, when the firing pin is fully forward. CONDITION: receiver retains fair to good amounts of its original case colored finish, exhibiting some areas of fading, as well as scattered spots/patches of light surface oxidation overall. Trigger guard and buttplate have mostly faded to gray and brown patinas, exhibiting scattered spots of light to mild oxidation and pitting. Bbl. retains large amounts of its blue finish, exhibiting some wear and thinning fading to gray patina, as well as scattered spots of light to mild surface oxidation overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting a few scattered patches of mild to moderate pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood stock shows numerous marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sound. An extremely intriguing Belgian parlor rifle. PROVENANCE: Estate of Groves Herrick. (25-5770/MLW). CURIO. $300-500.
