"NYW" WITH TARBELL INSPECTION MARKS. The boarding pike was one of the most popular weapons in the US Navy during the days of sail. Pikes like this found many uses aboard a ship, but were primarily used to repel boarders. Pikes similar to this style are common sights in collections of early Naval arms, however to find a fully marked example with firm War of 1812 usage is a true rarity. This pike measures nearly 90" overall with a 12" head that includes short 2 1/2" languets. One facet of the four sided blade is boldly marked "N.Y.W", another facet is marked "X J.T X"; which is the well known inspector's mark of Captain Joseph Tarbell who died in 1815. This fact confirms that this pike saw War of 1812 service aboard one of the US Navy's many warships. A third side is marked "U.S" completing the series of marks on this early Naval pike. A pike head matching this exact example was recovered from the USS Niagara. The flagship of Oliver Hazard Perry. The long wooden haft appears to have been painted a brick red at one time, but now has an ancient coating of darkened white paint. There is no cap on the butt. CONDITION: the head shows appropriate wear from years of service, but the markings are bold. The haft shows ample wear, but remains solid yet a bit soiled. It is truly an unexpected opportunity to obtain a rarely seen marked and Tarbell inspected M1816 style boarding pike. (02-26609/BF). NON-GUN. $3,000-4,000.
