U.S. Model 1842 Muzzleloading Percussion Pistol, by Henry Aston, #NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5" round barrel marked "U.S." (very faint), "WN/P" and "H" at breech, has large nipple bolster. Beveled lockplate marked "U.S./H. Aston & Co." ahead of the hammer and "Middtn/Conn /1851" vertically behind. Brass fittings comprise of two-piece trigger guard with lower tang extending to round buttcap, having long backstrap reaching to barrel tang, serpentine sideplate with integral tang to barrel band. Iron stirrup ramrod with button tip. Oil-finished walnut 3/4 stock. Mfg'd 1851. Condition is very good, the gunmetal gray barrel with oxidation, pitting at muzzle, else generally smooth steel and lightly toned brass having scattered dings, sharp edges, and markings. Stock is sound showing a 2.25" hairline crack at front sideplate screw, 1" hairlines at front and back of lock, occasional age and use marks, added varnish, lacks left-side inspector mark. Action is strong and crisp; smoothbore shows light etching. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
