T. Davidson & Co. Half-Stock Percussion Plains Rifle, #NVSN, .38 cal., 39" octagon barrel, brown finish. Smooth tiger striped maple half-stock with pewter cap, pipes and smooth brass buttplate. Dovetailed German silver knife blade front sight, fixed U-notch rear sight, full-length brass tipped wooden ramrod, exaggerated brass trigger guard with finger rest, and double set triggers. Lockplate is lightly engraved. Markings on the barrel are partially legible. Mfg'd in the mid-19th century. Rifle is in good overall condition. The barrel is a mottled silver/brown patina with scrapes and impressions. The barrel has what appears to "H. Sheets" in script. Lockplate is lightly engraved with moderate to heavy corrosion, marked "T. DAVIDSON & Co." Stock is in very good condition, with indentations and scuffs, showing attractive tiger striping. Action is not functioning as the hammer will not hold in the cocked position. H. Sheets could be referring to Henry Sheets, a noted 19th century gunsmith in Augusta County, Virginia. The lock markings refer to Tyler Davidson & Co, a prominent hardware supplier in Cincinnati, Ohio active from 1834-1866 and known for supplying lockplates for local gunsmiths. Est.: $300-$500.
