Springfield 1863 Percussion Cap Rifle C/w Bayonet Civil War 58 Cal

The Model 1863 was produced in two variants. The Type I (which we believe this one is) eliminated
the band springs and replaced the flat barrel bands with oval clamping bands.

The Model 1863 also has the distinction of being the last muzzle-loading longarm produced by the
Springfield Armory. It fired via percussion lock, which was much more reliable and weather resistant
compared to the older flintlock muskets.

overall Condition is a 6/10 and gun represents as a well used 1863 Springfield 58 cal war rifle - lock
is tight and crisp still - percussion nipple will need replacing as its chipped.
Overall heavy pitting and vintage battle-field patina to all metal surfaces.

On side lock is US SPRINGFIELD with Eagle logo and behind hammer is 1863 - the stock is nice
and tight with no cracks. May have been refinihsed sometime in its life.

Steel butt plate has US stamped on it plus all the barrel bands have a U stamped on them.

The Bayonet has the same overal patina and overal pitting as the gun - Point has been damaged.

About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S.with over 800,000 of which were made by the
Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics
rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War.
