Sharps 1863 Falling Block Carbine 50-70 Govt Caliber - Civil War

Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading rifles, beginning with
a design by Christian Sharps in 1848 and ceasing production in 1881.
They were renowned for long-range accuracy. By 1874, the rifle was available in a variety of calibers,
and it was one of the few designs to be successfully adapted to metallic cartridge use.

Caliber: .50-70 Govt.

Action Type: Single Shot Lever-Action Falling Block Rifle

Markings: The rear left portion of the barrel is marked with a small faint what appears to be a F A W
The top of the barrel has a very small faint 1863 stamped into it near the breech.
The left side of the receiver block has a faded stamp SHARP’S PAT SEPT. 12TH 1848.
The top tang is marked 84680. The top of the breech-block is marked S.
The steel butt-plate is marked S. The right side of the frame has a clear mark R.S. LAWRENCE
PAT. APRIL 12TH 1859 and C. SHARPS’ PAT. OCT. 5TH 1852.
The receiver lever pin is marked C. The rear sight is faded but marked R.S. LAWRENCE PATENTED
FEB. 15TH 1869.
The left side of the rear stock is marked with 2 cartouches . One by receiver that is scroll initials RJY
and one center that could be DFC.

Barrel Length: 22 inches

Sights/ Optics: There is a fixed base with a fixed metal blade and a folding ladder which presents a
V-notch in the down position and when raised presents a fixed V at the top, a aperture, a V-notch
slider and a V-notch at the bottom. The ladder is marked 2-8, inclusive.

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The stocks are two-piece wood featuring a forend secured by
a barrel band and retaining screw, a straight wrist, a straight comb and a semi-crescent butt-plate.
The stock has some light-moderate handling marks, nicks and scuffs.
The LOP is 13.5 inch from the trigger to the centre of the cresent butt-plate.
Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition for an Antique.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with mostly sharp rifling.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 15% of its metal finish. There is still appreciable bluing on
the barrel. The exposed portion of the barrel has light surface oxidation and has taken a dull patina
color.
There are some light handling marks, nicks and scuffs. Some markings have faded but the
discernible markings have been described above. Overall, the rifle is in Very Good condition considering
its age..

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.
