Scarce U.S. Army Marked Smith & Wesson 1st Model 1899 Military & Police Double Action Revolver, #13890, .38 Long Colt cal., 6" barrel, blue finish, checkered walnut two-piece diamond center grips with lanyard ring, blade front sight, fixed "U"-notch rear sight, color case hardened hammer and trigger. Factory markings are clear, with the butt marked "U.S. ARMY / MODEL 1899". Revolver is in very good overall condition, retaining approx. 80%-85% thinning finish, with wear at the muzzle, scratches, and scattered spots of surface erosion. Cylinder shows leading edgewear, wear around the flutes, and numerous indentations. Front and backstrap have worn to gray, while the trigger guard shows traces of original finish. There is a crisp "K.S.M." (Kelley S. Morse) inspection mark at the left rear of the frame. Hammer and trigger display muted color case hardened finish. Grips are in very good condition, with areas of smoothing to the checkering and indentations on the right panel. Marked "J.T.T 1901" (John Taliaferro Thompson) at the top of the left panel and "K.S.M." at the top of the right. Interior of the right panel is lightly marked in pencil with the matching serial number. Action functions well and locks up securely. Bore is very good with some areas of light erosion and well-defined rifling. Part of a group of 1,000 revolvers issued to the U.S. Army in the S&W serial number range 13001-14000. Chambered in .38 Long Colt, referred to as ".38 Military" to avoid using a competitors name. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (C&R)
