TO INFANTRY RIFLE. Cal. 50 RF. S# 18618. The conversions of these rifles were conducted in 1871 by Springfield Armory. Approx 1100 were performed. It was fitted with a 32.5" 3-groove 50 RF bbl. The barrel was numbered by the armory with the rec SN. The conversions such as this one utilized Burnside marked 1865 carbines. In addition to the updated bbl, the armory added a Stabler cut-off which has been removed from this example. The forearm is is nearly full length and held with 2 iron bbl bands and fitted with a iron block front sight and ladder adj rear sight. The rec/stock retain the saddle ring bar and the ring is present. The butt has a faint oval cartouche ring and terminates with an iron buttplate. Small sub-inspector marks are found on the majority of the small parts. The rec has an added electro penciled name. CONDITION: overall fair-good. The metal is void of finish with an even grey patina with some light mottled old oxidation spots. Stock set is good with sanding, hand wear and numerous handling marks. The forearm has added old varnish. The cleaned bore has distinct rifling with some spots of pitting. (01-29161/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
