EAGLE FIRST CLASS AWARDED TO CONSUL GINO BUSI OF ITALY. A truly stunning example of a rare identified WWII Order of the German Eagle First Class awarded to Gino Busi, Consul of Italy who is best known for photographing the haunting images of German troops marching men and boys to the death in Katowice, Poland just days after the 1939 invasion of Poland. The award itself is beautiful silver gilt with the finest white enamel. The overall length of the ribbon, including ties, is nearly 42". It is housed in a gold embossed red leather case with a black velvet interior base and a white silk pillow that is gold embossed "Verdienskreuz I. Stufe des Ordens vom Deutchen Adler". The group also include and award document in its original folder that awards the medal to Busi. The document has a " Hitler " signature at the bottom. There is also an Ausweis allowing Busi to travel from Warschau to Berlin. Finally, there are two letters (with translation) from the Italian Ambassador to Germany in Berlin to Busi congratulating him on the award and discussing other matters. CONDITION: the medal and case show very light wear. The documents are a bit yellowed but are quite sound. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (02-25584/BF). NON-GUN. $3,000-5,000.
