Cal. 60. S# NSN. John Clark is known to have been working at 133 Holborn Hill, London in 1783 and is most likely the maker of this pistol that has 8" barrel faceted ovate at breech and swamped to flare at muzzle. Round bodied flint lock with rounded serpentine cock, integral rounded pan, bridled friction frizzen and feather spring with spear finial is engraved "CLARK" under pan. Dark European walnut, knob grip stock extends to muzzle and is pinned to barrel. Simple mouldings are around lock and side plates and a carved shell is behind barrel tang. Steel trigger guard has husk finial. Other mounts are unhallmarked relief cast silver, with grotesque mask grip cap, pierced sideplate with arms, unicorn and lion and vacant crest plate at top of grip with scroll and satyr's head. Replaced ramrod mounts through steel beaded pipe and matching thimble. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron and steel parts considerably pitted and are mostly dark brown but show some cleaning to silver. Stock is sound but shows heavy wear of its old, possibly original, finish. Silver is good; moderately rubbed. Bore is dark and pitted. Lock is good; frizzen spring weak. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27434/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
