MODEL 70 BOLT ACTION CARBINE IN RARE 9MM MAUSER. Cal.9x57 (9mm Mauser) S# 20779. One of the rarest offerings, Winchester Model 70s chambered in 9x57 were not a standard offering and rarely show up on the collectors market. Consignor states these rifles were manufactured for the European Market and seldom return to the U.S with any condition. Manufactured in 1938 with 20" carbine length barrel with integral heavily stippled ramp front sight and proper Lyman 31 W bead. Rear sight is typical standard Winchester 22G having 3C step elevator. Left side of bbl stamped " -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-MODEL 70-WINCHESTER TRADEMARK-9 M/M.". Left side of receiver and bbl have "W P Proof marks". Bottom of bbl stamped "9M/M 37". Type 1 carbona blued "Cloverleaf tang" receiver with matted front and rear bridges. Left side of receiver stamped with first type Winchester trademark. Tang cocking groove bears the number "4". The standard magazine box with 3 vertical crimps on each side. Standard magazine spring measures 2 5/8" long at attachment to follower. Follower is short magnum pattern Winchester part #10570A. Bolt is Serial numbered to match. Standard extractor stamped "A" at the bottom. Magnum size bolt face. American black walnut buttstock with 20 line per inch checkering, has glossy finish with checkered steel buttplate. Barrel channel of stock stamped "37". Early 1 1/4" sling swivels. " THE RIFLEMAN'S RIFLE" By Roger C. Rule page 264 lists the 9x57 cartridge as one of the confirmed non-standard chamberings with photos of multiple examples on following pages. It is likely, being only 3rd year of manufacturer, that this special order Model 70 would have been built utilizing a left over Model 54 barrel. CONDITION: Metal parts retain 96% original blue finish with muzzle wear at both sides and faint light freckling at left rear of receiver. Stock shows honest light wear with scattered light to moderate dings, impressions and scratches. Very good shiny bore shows crisp rifling. A Model 70 carbine chambered in 9mm Mauser is sure to fill a void in the collection of multiple Model 70 enthusiasts. Visit our website for additional photography. (26-2392/BH). CURIO. $9,000-14,000.
