DRAGOON REVOLVER. Cal. .40. S# 200. This sophisticated revolver was an early competitor of Samuel Colt, that Colt sued the manufacturer for patent infringement in 1851 and won the case. Therefore, these revolvers have limited production ending after 1851; estimated at under 800, majority made with 7" barrels, very few 6.25" barrels are known like this example, found in early production. Hinged barrel marked "MASS ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALL" on top flat. Lock marked "WESSON'S & LEAVITT'S PATENT", back of cylinder marked "LEAVITT's PATENT APRIL 29, 1837" and behind cylinder "WESSON'S PATENT AUG. 28, 1849". CONDITION: good overall, complete & original, all matching, good markings, mottled gray metal. Grips solid & well fit, traces of original varnish. Mechanics need attention, hand does not retract properly when cocked. Good rifled bore. PROVENANCE: James Julia Auctions, lot 1338, 3-12-2008. (01-28105/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
