PISTOL. Cal. 9x19mm. S# 8482o. Bbl. 3 15/16". Finding shortcomings with their domestically designed Ahlberg pistol, as well as encountering issues with France's Ruby pistol, the Finnish Ministry of Defense went to DWM in hopes of acquiring a contract for the P.08 Luger. DWM, constrained by the Treaty of Versailles could not provide Finland with the P.08, but could still offer them the Model 1920 Commercial Luger chambered in 7.65x21mm Parabellum. Finland ultimately agreed, designating the 7.65x21mm Luger as the "M/23" and subsequently rebarreled a small number of Lugers for the 9x19mm Parabellum, which were designated as the "M/08". In 1941 Finland ordered a number of replacement parts from Mauser to repair their M/23 and M/08 Lugers. By 1951, Finnish arsenals only retained approx. 341 M/08 Lugers, largely owing to their scarcity today. This example, an M/08 Luger, features Mauser production bbl. extension marked with the 2-digit year of mfg. "41" marked on the chamber. Toggle is marked with the intertwined "DWM" monogram logo. Left side of the breechblock is marked with a Crown/N commercial nitro proof. Finnish replacement bbl. is marked with the Tikka logo towards the breech. Rear grip strap is import marked "PRI GARDEN CITY KS/ P08 9MM GERMANY" along the sides of the stock lug. Right side of the frame exhibits a punch dot circle around the trigger pin slot. Metal components exhibit a Finnish arsenal reapplied blue finish overall, with the Mauser bbl. extension exhibiting its original salt blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips, the left panel seemingly carved with a faint upside down "ZV". Dovetailed Lahti pattern blade front sight with rear sight having been modified into a U-notch configuration. Takedown lever, trigger, and rear toggle link are matching via "62". Sideplate is mismatched via "44". Remaining parts/components are unnumbered. MAGS: 1 non-matching steel 8-rd. with imperially proofed wood plug. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their blue finishes, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray patina, scattered superficial handling marks, some scattered spots of light to mild pitting, as well as some spots of hardened grease. Strawed parts exhibit either a Finnish arsenal reapplied blue finish, or have faded to a gray patina. Bright bore, exhibiting some light pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show moderate wear, with scattered handling marks and some areas of flattening. Left panel exhibits a chip in the usual area, at and to the right of the safety lever. (25-6057/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
