MODEL 1842 PISTOL. Cal. 54. NSN. Standard configuration of Mexican War single shot cavalry pistol, 8.5" front blade sight, brass furniture, lock marked "US / H. ASTON" forward of hammer "MIDDtn / CONN / 1847" vertically at tail, walnut stock, captured ramrod assembly. Barrel is inspected "US / JH /P" (Joseph Hannis) and dated 1847. Small "P" inspection found on all 4 brass furniture parts. Stock has 2 bright inspector cartouches: "NWP" (Nahun W. Patch-famously inspector for Walker revolvers also made 1847) & "WAT" (William A. Thornton). This is very difficult M-1842 pistol to find as production and survival is very limited especially in superior condition, most were used in Mexico and many did not come back. CONDITION: very good overall, all original and matching, good markings, mechanics fine, clear smooth bore. PROVENANCE: James Julia Auctions, lot 75, 3-12-2007. (01-28089/JS). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
