NO. 1" LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 454. Bbl. 3 15/16". 1 of only 1,484 Luger pistols (Dutch designation: "Automatic Pistol No. 1") mfg. by DWM under contract for the Dutch Navy circa. 1928-1929. The left side of the bbl. extension is marked with a Crown/N commercial nitro proof, which is repeated on the left side of the breechblock, as well as on the underside of the bbl. Toggle is marked with the intertwined DWM monogram logo. Left side of frame is properly marked "RUST" above a downward facing feathered arrow. Metal components exhibit a rust blue finish overall, with some small parts including the takedown lever, trigger, mag. release button, safety lever, and ejector exhibiting a straw finish. Some straw parts, most notably the takedown lever, appear to have been reheated at one time. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered wood grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, trigger, bbl., bbl. extension, trigger bar, breechblock, and toggles. Remaining parts are unnumbered. MAGS: x1 plated 8-rd. with wood plug marked "083". CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting some light edge wear that is fading to gray patina, areas of light to mild wear and thinning on the grip straps and edges of the muzzle that are fading to brown patina, as well as some superficial handling marks overall. Strawed parts retain the majority of their finish, exhibiting some light wear and thinning that has faded to gray patina and show some scattered spots of age related discoloration. Very bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of light pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some light smoothing and a few minor nicks to the diamonds, but otherwise remain very good overall. Mag. body exhibits scattered spots of flaking and light pitting. Wood plug is cracked, but otherwise remains sound. The majority of Dutch Contract Lugers (Army or Navy) were sent to the Dutch East Indies, where between their extensive use and the humid tropical environment, their condition significantly diminished and most were arsenal refinished, making this is a very attractive and high condition example of a scarce Dutch Navy contract Luger. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. (26-1176/MLW). CURIO. $2,500-4,500.
