Bayonet blade measures 9", bayonet measures 13 5/8" overall. Left ricasso is marked "1900". Right ricasso is marked "US". This bayonet popularly known among collectors as "The Bowie Bayonet"; was officially designated "Combination Knife Bayonet and Trenching Tool". Designed in 1900, approx. 2,000 were mfg. They were sent to Cuba and the Philippines to be evaluated. The advantages and disadvantages were considered and the bayonet was not adopted. No further production was made. Bayonet has standard Krag type construction as to the smooth walnut grips secured by 2 rivets and the straight crossguard with muzzle ring. The blade features a wide point which facilitated digging and a short section of the back of the blade was sharpened. The steel scabbard with oscillating belt hook has a ball finial. CONDITION: bayonet has lightly worn blade. Blade is unsharpened but has notable nick in forward curved edge and several tiny nicks at the edge. Grips have light wear and handling marks. Balance of metal has been lightly cleaned showing spots of oxidation and very fine pitting. Scabbard is turning gray with traces of original blue finish and exhibits wear and scratches and has two notable dents in the face. (02-26254/RW). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,000.
