72 OPEN TOP ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44RF. S# 3772. Standard configuration of the transitional revolver between model 1860 armies and 1873 single actions. This revolver manufactured about 1873-1874, standard configuration, 7.5" barrel, 1-line "New York U.S. America" address, integral rear sight unique to this model. 2-line patents on left side of frame. Iron grip frame contains nicely patinaed Colt ivory grips. Ejector housing on right side of barrel. This was not a popular model for Colt, and most of production was sold in South America, good survivors such as this with that "cowboy look" are hard to find. CONDITION: very good overall, all matching & complete other than replaced wedge & wedge screw, cleaned smooth gray patina, good markings, rolled naval battle scene with areas of pitting. Mechanically fine, good rifled bore. Grips well fit with large chips at outside toes. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of William Pirie Co-Author of "Variations of Colt's New Model Police & Pocket Breech Loading Pistols". (01-29264/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
