Rare Soviet Tula Arsenal 1936 Stable Trials Mosin Nagant Bolt Action Rifle, #05065, 7.62x54Rmm cal., 28.75" barrel, blued finish, hardwood stock and handguard, hooded post front sight with top hole, and adjustable tangent rear sight with "U"-notch graduated to 2000 meters. Includes a steel cleaning rod and green cotton sling with leather collars, both are in very good condition. Top of the receiver ring is marked with Soviet Tula Arsenal maker's mark and "1936/05065", and small "(stars)" stamped on the bolt assembly and buttplate. Right side of the buttstock is stamped "(Tula star)/1937" along with "r/MII", and a small "315" has been carved into the underside of the forend. Matching numbers on the magazine floorplate and butt plate; bolt does not match. No visible import marks. Rifle has a front band with bayonet lug on underside. Condition overall is very good, retaining approx. 80% finish, with most parts showing some degree of brown toning, as well as patina to the magazine. The bright bolt assembly is also toned darker. Wood is very good, showing handling marks to the dark reddish colored finish, which has mostly turned to a dull color from the wrist to the buttstock. Action operates smoothly. Bore has a spot of patina near the muzzle and otherwise rates good with clear rifling. Rifle is a rare Soviet variation produced in 1936-37 to improve the accuracy and utility of the standard Soviet service rifle. The major change was the addition of a Mauser "H" style front barrel band and a knife type bayonet lug mounted to the tip of the forend. The front sight hood is the early style milled type with round inner circle with standard style post. Barrel bands have a wide split on the bottom. There are no numbers or letters stamped across the rear of the buttstock. Made in small numbers, these rifles are marked with a unique serial number range beginning with the number "0" and were sent as military aid to Republican forces in Spain during the Civil War, eventually bought by military surplus dealers and sold in the U.S. in the 1950's. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (C&R)
