CONTAINED IN SINGLE SHEATH.These knives are pictured & described on pages 145-146 of James R. Johnston's "Accoutrements III". He opines these large bowies could be used in dueling in New Orleans. This is probably more folklore or myth, but this is remarkable pair of bowies. Knives almost identical one is 17" overall, 11.5" blade & other 17.25" with 11.75" blade. Blades are each just over 2" wide, about .25" thick, saber ground, 3" steel ovoid cross guards, full tang, ebony slab handles. Scabbard is carved 3-piece wood body, thin Moroccan leather veneered cover with reinforcing screwed leather strap at throat. Knives only fit perfectly in their designated side of sheath, as each mortise custom carved for each blade. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of pages from Accoutrements III where knives are featured. CONDITION: very good overall to fine overall, blades are uncleaned with staining & original polishing & grinding marks. Sheath has losses to veneer and open seams along edges. PROVENANCE: James R. Johnston collection. (02-27254/JS). NON-GUN. $8,000-10,000.
