RARE U.S. MARKED REMINGTON  THE SPORTSMAN
SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIOT SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA, 2 3/4". S# 494292. Bbl. 20". The Sportsman semi-automatic riot shotgun mfg. by Remington under contract for the U.S. military circa. 1942 as part of the first of two blocks. The top of the bbl. is marked with Remington's mfg. and Browning's patent information, with "U.S." and a flaming ordnance bomb marked towards the breech. Left side of the bbl. is marked with the cal. designation, followed by a "CYL" choke marking, and the date code "CL" (April, 1942). Left side of the receiver is marked "U.S.", followed by a flaming ordnance bomb proof and "MILITARY FINISH", above the Remington trademark logo and S#. Side of bolt is marked "THE/ SPORTSMAN". Receiver and breech end of bbl. exhibit a correct dull military blue finish, with the exposed section of the bbl. exhibiting what appears to be an added (or reapplied) layer of gray enamel finish. Plain unmarked wood forearm and plain pistol grip buttstock with grooved mottled brown synthetic buttplate appear to have been lightly sanded and refinished. Toeline of buttstock exhibits a small drilled hole for a sling swivel attachment, which is absent. Left side of buttstock is marked with a U.S. crossed cannons ordnance escutcheon, followed by inspector initials "FJA" (Lt. Col. Frank J. Atwood). Bead front sight is absent. 3-rd. tube mag. Bbl. does not match the receiver, but is in the same S# block (S#: 459260). CONDITION: receiver retains the vast majority of its original factory dull blue finish, exhibiting some light edge wear, some scattered superficial handling marks, and a few spots of light surface oxidation. Bbl. retains the majority of its gray enamel type finish, exhibiting some superficial handling marks, with some unusual texturing on the top, right, and bottom at and around the muzzle area. Bolt retains a bright appearance. Mirror bore, exhibiting some scratches and streaks of hardened firing residue. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows some scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the forearm exhibiting a crack on the left and right sides, and 2 small cracks on the underside, all stemming from the receiver.
