WINCHESTER 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-90 WCF. S# 10394. Mfg. 1887. This interesting London proofed example has numerous special order features including; button mag, case coloring, & shotgun butt. It is fitted with a shortened 21" round bbl with a replacement dovetailed sporting front sight & fixed leaf rear sight (missing leaf). It has the early bbl address "-MANUFACTURED BY THE - / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-", "45-90" caliber marking on top of the bbl, British crown proofed ".451", & assembly number "34", as well as, circle VP proofs and "45-90" under the handguard. The case colored frame is marked with the British crown proof on the left upper corner and it has an early "-MODEL 1886-" upper tang marking. The blued bolt is marked with the British crown proof as well. The lower tang is marked with an assembly number "19" and "S". The assembly number "19" is found stamped into the channel of the butt, written in chalk under the buttplate, & stamped on the reverse of the smooth steel shotgun buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Letter indicating; SN applied Nov. 8, 1887 / Type: Rifle / Caliber: 38/56 / Barrel Type: Round / Trigger: Plain / Sights: Winchester Express / 1/2 Magazine / Shotgun Butt / Received in warehouse on December 05, 1887 / Shipped from warehouse on December 06, 1887, Order number 465 / Returned James Kerr and Company / Shipped from warehouse on September 15, 1890, Order number 1656." As the letter indicates it appears that the rifle was returned to the factory and rebarreled for the larger 45-90 WCF cartridge. It was proofed with the new barrel when it was sent back to Kerr. CONDITION: overall very good. The bbl is mostly void of finish with some remaining in the protected areas. The balance has a lightly mottled smooth greyish brown patina. The rec has 40% of its gently fading case colors with some minor handling marks. The bolt has been reblued over the British proof. The stock set is good with a fair amount of the original varnish remaining on the butt. The forearm is hand worn with a couple of minor edge chips and mild handling marks. The butt has some minor edge chips and numerous scattered dings, some of which are heavy. Bore is cleaned shiny with good rifling and pitting. (01-26702/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
