LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 68482. Mfg. 1892. This rare original deluxe 86 has numerous special order features that nearly identically match the accompanying Cody letter. The barrel is a 28" part octagon with dovetailed German silver blade front sight. The rear sight is the only part that does not match the Cody letter which indicates it should be a "Winchester Express Sight" there is currently a semi buckhorn sporting rear sight installed. The barrel is marked with the early 2-line address "- MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" & "45-70" cal marking. The underside of the bbl carries the assembly number "264", inspection proofs, & 45-70 cal marking. The frame was case colored with early "-MODEL 1886-" upper tang marking. The lower pistol grip tang is marked with assembly markings "264'", "SB", & "XX". The bolt is blued. It is fitted with the original factory pattern checkered "XX" deluxe pistol grip stock set. The assembly number "26?" is found in the upper channel. The smooth steel buttplate is marked on the underside with the assembly number "264 S". The factory H style checkered forearm has the assembly number "264" penciled in the bbl channel. Factory sling swivels. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody letter with the following info... "RIFLE / 45/70 CALIBER / 28" 1/2 OCTAGON BARREL / PLAIN TRIGGER / CHECKERED STOCK, PISTOL GRIP / WINCHESTER EXPRESS SIGHTS / 1/2 MAGAZINE / SHOTGUN BUTT / SLING AND SWIVEL / RECEIVED IN THE WAREHOUSE ON JULY 19, 1892 / SHIPPED FROM THE WAREHOUSE ON JULY 19, 1892". CONDITION: overall good condition. The bbl finish has mostly turned to a brownish/grey patina with some of the original bluing remaining in the protected areas. There are some smooth old spots of dark surface oxidation present. The case coloring has faded with exposed metal having an even grey patina with some light pitting in the carry area. The stock set is hand worn with some flaking original varnish. The forearm has some light handling marks and a little shrinkage, but otherwise nice with good refreshed checkering. The butt is good with some scattered moderate handling marks and refreshed checkering. Bore is frosted with some pitting and decent rifling. (01-26704/ZAL). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
