Cal. 44. S# 241. This is a rare Texas revolver utilizing machinery and some parts from Civil War Tucker & Sherrard wartime manufacture. For many years these revolvers were thought made during the Civil War and gun is listed by serial number in Albaugh's Confederate Revolver text as one of six known. There are only about 10 Clark & Sherrard revolvers known, all made & sold postwar 1866-1867; most show long hard use. Bill Gary lists 6 S#s in this text 115, 231, 249, 288, 308, & 404, 4 of which are maker marked with etched "TEXAS ARMS" cylinders. A.S. Clark foreman for Clark, Sherrard & Co. wrote in 1867 that he had on hand "about 400 caliber /44 old style army revolvers which we plan to embellish into high class merchandise. We are prepared to furnish you a dozen at $20 gold each.". It is highly doubtful 400 revolvers were on hand as to the very few survivors. Made much like the wartime "Tucker & Sherrard" with barrels having no loading notch cut in lug, but round trigger guard instead of square back on wartime revolvers. This revolver utilized unserialized Colt 3rd model dragoon frame and letters of authenticity state opinion of originality. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Letters of authentication by Bill Gary & John Sexton 2006; Copy of James Julia auction listing & paid receipt. CONDITION: good to very good, all original as used with Colt dragoon grip frame, old contemporary braised crack repair on left side of frame. PROVENANCE: James Julia Auction lot 836, Oct. 6, 2006; David Berenson estate collection. (01-29630/JS). ANTIQUE $15,000-20,000.
