Cal. 10ga. S# 2899. Bbl. 26". These fine shotguns were produced by Colt from 1883-95 with 3 major variations. The highest grade that the company produced featured elaborate game scene engraving, tight damascus barrel patterns, & nicely figured curly walnut stocks. This example's tight pattern damascus barrel has a raised solid matte rib with the "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." address. The rib has a doll's head extension with fine engraved accents. The bbl flats are marked with the SN and various inspection and assembly markings including; "S", "G", & "P". Extractor. Double triggers. The action is is finely finished with detailed game & dog scenes featuring a point setter flushing a woodcock from a bush on the left panel. The right panel has a pair of bird dogs on point flushing two woodcock from field brush. The scenes are surrounded with well cut small shaded scroll with line borders. The floorplate is engraved in a stylized font "PATENTED AUG 22 & SEP19, 1882" with matching scroll accents. The engraving covers approx 70% of the frame. The trigger guard is engraved further with a duck floating in a pond scene on the bow. It is stocked with a round knob point pattern checkered buttstock of nicely marbled walnut that measures with a 13 3/4" LOP over checked rampant colt hard rubber buttplate. The side panels are also checked. The splinter forend is checked en suite with an ebony inletted tip & Deeley style latch. MEASUREMENTS: Bbl: DAH: 2 3/4" DAC: 1 1/2". LOP:13 3/4" WEIGHT: 7lb. 6oz. CONDITION: Overall attractive example. The bbl has nice even and distinct pattern with spots of old oxidation, some denting at the muzzle, small holes tapped in the bottom of the rib likely for a sling swivel, & have been shortened to the 26" length. The frame finish has faded to a balanced silvered patina with a small patch of old oxidation on the trigger guard bow. The engraving is crisp. The stock set is sound with hand wear. The forearm has been lightly refinished with a small edge repair along the left edge. The butt has been lightly sanded in areas with some added varnish and some hand wear to the checkering. Bore has light frosting, a small dent 3" from the muzzle of the left tube and a couple of small dents 5" from the muzzle on the left tube. (01-29223/ZAL) ANTIQUE $1500-2250
