WINCHESTER 1885 LOW WALL FALLING BLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 22 Short. S# 98810. Mfg. 1905 with 28" octagon No. 2 weight barrel having globe front sight (supplied by original customer), no provision for rear sight and Lyman tang sight with aperture disc. Blued barrel and receiver. Case hardened beech block and original spur trigger lever. Single set trigger. Smooth walnut ebony tipped Schnabel forend. Smooth walnut pistol grip buttstock with Winchester hard rubber grip cap and nickel plated Swiss buttplate. There are two holes drilled in bottom rear of forend, likely for prior installation of a palm rest. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Buffalo Bill Historical Center Letter stating the following: "Rifle / 22 short / #2—28 inch octagon barrel / sling & swivel / no rear seat / Swiss plate / Lyman rear cup disc / Globe front furnished by customer / Received in the warehouse May 13, 1905 / Shipped from the warehouse May 15, 1905 / Repaired and returned February 14, 1906". CONDITION: Fine plus overall, receiver and barrel retain approx. 90% original blue with high edge wear, muzzle wear, scratches and some scattered small spots of freckled oxidation. Top right of receiver has small area of cleaned oxidation and light flaking. Balance of lever turning silver with 30% original bright case colors toward top half. Breech block retains 75% vivid case colors buttplate retains 85% original nickel with flaking at heel, toe and right side. Stock set retains 70% factory original varnish with numerous light impressions, scattered fine scratches and even hand wear. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Mechanically excellent, set trigger functions properly. (26-2402/BH). CURIO. $3,500-4,500.
