VALLEY FOWLER.Cal. 70. NSN. 52" tapered round import British barrel, dovetailed crescent blade front sight, breech and tang have cut-in sighting groove. Mounted on curly maple, early high comb with raised carved moldings around lock, sideplate, and triggerguard. Pointed tail engraved British commercial lockplate has unsupported serpentine cock and unbridled frizzen, circa 1760 as is commercial proofed barrel, distinctive early feature is curl on toe of trigger. Ornate Hudson Valley triggerguard is mounted on a raised relief molding with arrow-like finials, fluted trigger bow, Dutch-style lobed buttplate tang is extra-long. Early ramrod pipes have ring design, barrel tang is surrounded by relief carving. Triangular American sideplate like lock has raised relief moldings terminating in pointed beavertails. There is incised tendrils rear of back ramrod pipe continuing along both sides of the ramrod channel to nose. Wood ramrod has iron tip and worm attached. A large set of initials carved on left buttstock "NV" as found on so many Revolutionary War longarms. CONDITION: very good overall, dark patina, original flint configuration, replaced top jaw to cock and frizzen screw. Brass furniture has mixed mottled patinas. Stock is sound hand worn patina with age cracks and lock, inset repair by varnish coated, mechanics function, smooth clear bore. PROVENANCE: William Ivey Collection. (01-29029/JS).
