ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER.Cal. 36. S# 37702. Inscribed on backstrap in 3 script lines: "Pedro Santana / Libertador of the Dominican Republic / From the Inventor". Revolver made in 1854, when Santana was newly elected president and a new constitution was being adopted. He was previously general of the armies who ousted Haitian forces and was given title "Liberator of the Fatherland". Colt used the Spanish version of "liberator" in presentation. This cased revolver was awarded an NRA silver medal in San Antonio in 1979. Pedro Santana (1801-1864) general, president & dictator, he was loved and hated during Dominican Republic's independence in 1844, dictatorial rule, annexation by Spain and 2nd Dominican Republic emerging after Santana's death. Santana had the reputation of killing & torturing & making martyrs of his enemies both male & female. Standard configuration 7.5" octagonal barrel, New York address, "COLTS PATENT" engraved in arc on frame, full coverage engraving of Gustav Young-style scrolls terminating in flowers and serpent's head on left barrel lug, burl walnut grips, silver plated brass grip frame. Housed in interesting leather veneered compartmented casing with panoply of arms eagle navy flask, 2-cavity brass "COLTS PANENT" mold, pack of "COL COLT'S PATENT / REVOLVING BELT PISTOL" cartridges, pewter oiler, combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, pack of green label ELY caps, and functional key. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of papers including 1945 museum loan card with text "…Many persons were killed by Santana with this arm, later he was killed by it.", boxed NRA silver medal # 191 and NRA certification. CONDITION: very good overall, complete & matching, good crisp markings, presentation slightly worn with newer silver, grips retain much original glossy varnish, inked museum accession number on butt. Mechanics fine, crisp rifled bore. Casing is very good, accessories good, label torn on cap tin.
