MODEL 1871 GATLING GUN. Cal. 577/45. Registry # 2754. This is an impressive gun on field carriage made to utilize 1872 patented Broadwell drum magazines. These guns were used in South Africa during Zulu Wars with great affect. 120 guns were manufactured, other surviving registry numbers range 2754-2766. Round to octagonal barrel cluster measures 31.75". Cast brass manufacturing plaque mounted top of breech: "0.45 INCH GATLING GUN / MANUFACTURED BY / SIR W.G. ARMSTRONG & CO. / ELSWICK ORDNANCE WORKS / NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE." Fixed blade front sight mounted on right side rail at muzzle; adjustable rear sight mounted on right rail at back just rear of hand crank which fits into fold out cradle that retains it when not in use. The heavy brass breech is hinged on left with spring loaded steel lock. The carriage components appear identical to other survivors and appear original, painted with OD paint with steel & brass hub 38" wheels. Most all gun and elevation components are assembly number "33" stamped. There are probably only about a dozen survivors known of the 120 made, scattered in museum collections worldwide. Only one other privately sold previously (registry # 2766, 1991) we can find. CONDITION: Fine overall, smooth brass & steel patinas, only slight oxidation noted on steel back plate of inside breech. This is an amazing survivor that mechanics are smooth in operation. Barrels are all original with ordnance proofs on each and like most all components stamped "33". There are few parts not assembly number marked, really fine gun. PROVENANCE: Military Museum Collection of Shooters Outpost, Hooksett NH. (01-26706/JS). $300,000-600,000.
