MATCHING PAIR OF REMINGTON MODEL 81 "SPECIAL POLICE" SEMI AUTO RIFLES. Cal. Both 35 Rem. Both mfg. June, 1942. Following the prohibition era of the 1920s when gangsters, bootleggers and criminals seemed to consistently overwhelm their law enforcement counterparts with firepower and sheer magazine capacity, it was clear that service revolvers and other standard issue weaponry were in serious need of an upgrade if law enforcement officials were to keep up. The "Special Police" conversion is viewed as their response.Initially developed in the 1930s as a conversion for the Model 8, the upgrade consisted of a detachable magazine of either 5, 10 or 15 rounds along with an extended forearm which was necessary to manage the recoil produced from firing in rapid succession, especially in the potent 35 Remington. The conversion was initially produced by the Peace Officer Equipment Company stationed in St. Joseph, MO. In 1936, following the introduction of the improved Model 81, Remington licensed the conversion with little success and would only manage to sell several hundred. Individually, these rifles adorn serious consideration from collectors. To have a consecutively numbered pair, complete with matching magazines is enough to give pause for any collector regardless of personal interest. Both rifles marked on left side of receiver "POLICE GUN-PROPERTY OF SPARROWS POINT POLICE DEPT". Both rifles feature a full blue metal finish with sporting sights. Smooth walnut 11 1/4" forends with pistol grip buttstocks having checkered steel Remington buttplates. MAGS: both with original matching numbered 15 rd. detachable mags.1) S# 20870. CONDITION: metal parts retain 97% original blue with scattered small areas of light freckling on receiver and mag. along with a safety lever scratch at right side. There appears to be an area of touch up at left front of receiver distinguished only by the softening of the sharp edge as bluing matches completely. Remainder of sharp edges are crisp, markings show raised metal around edges. Stock set is near excellent with only a few scattered light handling marks. Very good bore with strong rifling.2) S# 20871. CONDITION: metal parts retain 98% original blue with only scattered light freckling and just a hint of a safety lever scratch. Stock set near excellent with only a few scattered light handling marks. Bore shows strong rifling with even frosting in grooves. An amazing opportunity to own not only two rare Remington "Special Police" rifles, but potentially the only opportunity a person may have to own a consecutive pair! (26-1856 & 26-1857/BH). BOTH CURIO. $12,000-18,000
