MIQUELET CAVALRY PISTOL. Cal. 72. S# 8176. Mexican made military pistols are very rare, pistol is well marked noting F.M. (fabricated Mexico City). The R with crown is "real" for royal, 1818 Mexico was embroiled in "Mexican War of Independence" 1810-1821 when Mexico would leave Spanish empire and crown rule. According to notes from Compton Labauve who studied Mexican arms his whole life, only about 10 of these high copper copies of Spanish 1780 cavalry pistols are known in collections. There has never been one sold in auction that I could find. 18.5" overall, 11.9" barrel dated 1818, armory proofed barrel & lock, copper furniture, 6" belt hook. Inventory numbered "8176". CONDITION: good to very good overall, well worn, markings good, cleaned metal toned to copper & iron patinas. Stock has distinctive non-walnut grain from local Mexican wood. Complete & original other than added steel ramrod. Mechanics fine, good clear smooth bore. PROVENANCE: estate collection of Compton LaBauve, Jr. (01-28910/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
