Cal. 303 British. S# 47248. These snappy lightweight rifles were extremely popular in the 1890's through the early 1900's and are seldom found in good condition. This attractive example has 24" tapered round barrel with Nock form at rear and is fitted with one standing two folding leaf express rear sight with additional folding ladder which has slide marked for ranges out to 1000 yards. Silver bead front sight is in small soldered on base. Barrel shank is stamped with British proofs, BSA stacked rifle logo, and opposing broad arrows; meaning removal from government service. Barrel is dated for 1920 and is most likely a replacement. Lee Speed action with detachable box magazine; magazine cut off and tang safety is marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT BOLT HEAD" on dust cover. Right side of stock socket is marked "LEE -SPEED" "PATENTS" "B.S.A. Co." "J700". S# is on trigger guard bow. Some vine engraving outlines parts of action. Base of tang safety is marked "BSA PAT" "28834/97". Hard rubber capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/8" over steel buttplate with trap and is made of well streaked European walnut. A large sling eye matching that on barrel and a vacant silver oval are on toeline. Matching fore piece has horn tip, point pattern checkering, and reinforcing bolt at rear. MAG: 1 magazine in gun. CONDITION: very good as refinished at time of re barrel; barrel retaining about 80% blue. Action retains traces of what appears to be original blue with scattered light pitting especially on trigger guard bow. Bolt dust cover and magazine are re-blued. Stocks retain about 85% of an old, possibly original, finish with many bumps, knocks, and dings. Checkering fairly well worn. Bore is good; strong rifling dark in grooves. Attaching chain for magazine is missing. Otherwise, mechanically good. (26-1999/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-4,000.
